Zimbabwe’s deputy Information Minister, Energy Mutodi argued that former president Robert Mugabe’s government killed more people than his successor Emmerson Mnangagwa’s “New Dispensation” in a tweet on Sunday, February 24.
This was after Mugabe had criticised Mnangagwa about using the military to kill people during his birthday speech on Saturday, February 23.
Mutodi compared the number of people killed during the Gukurahundi massacres and the 2008 election under Mugabe’s government with the recent army shootings of 1 August 2018 and the Zimbabwe shutdown protest of February 14-16 under Mnangagwa’s government.
Ironically President Mnangagwa was the Minister of State Security during the Gukurahundi massacres and Mugabe’s Chief Election during the 2008 election.
We have noted some words of repentance by former President Mugabe saying army must protect not kill. True that a few have lost lives in running battles with the police but that can not compare with gukurahundi or the 2008 violence when he was at the helm.
