PICTURES: Joana Mamombe Arrives At Court For Treason Trial

MDC Alliance Member of the House of Assembly for Harare West, Ruvimbo Mamombe, has arrived at the magistrates courts.

Mamombe, who according to the party’s deputy treasurer-general Chalton Hwende is “the first woman to be charged with treason since the Cecil John Rhodes Era”, was arrested in dramatic circumstances on Saturday morning in Nyanga, after having been on the police wanted list for 55 days.

She was charged with attempting to overthrow and subvert a Constitutionally-elected government (Treason).

The crime carries up to 20 years in jail on conviction.

The charges stem from an incident when she addressed a Press Conference on 14th of January 2019 at Civic Center, Malborough, just as the violent #ShutDown Protests were building up across the country.

She is appearing in Court 6 at the Rotten Row magistrates court this morning.
