Edgars Stores has donated undergarments worth $18 300 to female prisoners at Chikurubi Maximum Prison.

The inmates recently received their undergarments, including bras and panties, during a handover ceremony at Chikurubi Maximum Security Prison, organised by River of Life Church, which also handed over toiletries to the prison choir.

“Edgars donated 340 sets of undergarments, with each inmate receiving two sets. The value of the donation is equivalent to ZWR$18 300. The decision to donate undergarments to the female inmates was brought about after we realised that there was a need and we stepped in to fill the gap,” Edgars group marketing executive Rumbidzai Dzimba said.

“We realised this is an often overlooked area. As a business, we donate to various institutions. (We are also into) environmental and wildlife initiatives as well as (provide) various humanitarian needs such as the recent Cyclone Idai. Hence, this is an extension of community engagement projects Edgars is already involved in.”

Dzimba said the donation was a way of celebrating March, the women’s month, according to a report by the NewsDay.
