10  people have p erished following a 12-car ho rror crash that took place on the N3 South near the Barry Marais off-ramp outside of Vosloorus in Ekurhuleni, South Africa.

Ekurhuleni Emergency Services spokesperson William Ntladi said that when emergency workers who responded to the scene arrived, they found twelve vehicles including six trucks, two minibuses, three light motor vehicles, and a pickup truck were all involved in the crash.

Ntladi said that 9 people were declared dead on site, one of the victims was burnt beyond recognition and 21 others were taken to hospitals nearby.

Of the injured, three were critical, nine were in serious but stable conditions and the last other nine patients, sustained minor injuries,” Ntladi said.

The preliminary investigation revealed that cause of the crash was due to dense smoke from a grass fire nearby blown across the road, obscuring the vision of the motorists,” Ntladi said.

“The investigation on the actual crash is still undetermined and continuing. The real cause of this multi-car pile-up will be revealed after the investigation,” Ntladi added.

Gauteng South African National Police Services spokesperson Kay Makhubele said that they have opened a case of culpable homicide to determine what caused the accident.
