Woman arrested after death of her disabled baby buried in a shallow grave

A mother from Limpopo has been detained pending the results of the postmortem investigation into the death of her 10-month-old baby.

The infant was discovered in Col. Malesela Ledwaba’s Giyani residence buried in a shallow grave, according to the police spokesperson.

The 29-year-old woman, a landlady, was questioned by her tenants on Saturday about the whereabouts of one of her children who had vanished out of the blue. She then left her home to go see her lover.

“They became suspicious and on Monday, they looked around the yard and noticed a shallow grave. Community members gathered at her house in her absentia and police were notified. They immediately followed the leads and traced the woman.

“She was taken to her house, where she pointed out a shallow grave in which she buried her daughter.”

When questioned, the mother claimed that the disabled child had passed away following an illness.

She admitted to authorities that she had buried the infant alone because she lacked a birth certificate.

The child’s cause of death will still be investigated through a post-mortem.

The woman is due to appear before the Giyani magistrate’s court on Thursday after being detained on Tuesday on suspicion of murder and obstructing the course of justice.
