JUST IN:Econet shuts down ‘suicide’ shop

The Econet Wireless shop along First Street in Harare CBD where a Guard Alert security guard shot himself dead was shut for business yesterday as police continued investigations into the incident.

Customers who visited the outlet for services were met at the entrance with a warning pasted onto the locked door, reading: “Apologies. This shop is temporarily closed. Kindly visit Joina City, Eastgate, Livingstone and Herbert Chitepo shops for service.”

National Police Spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the guard killed himself after CCTV footage exposed him stealing cellphones from the outlet earlier in the morning on Tuesday.

“We confirm that a Guard Alert security guard manning an Econet shop shot himself in the toilet yesterday afternoon. Allegations on the issue are that when the deceased reported for work that Tuesday morning, he was alone in the building and stole some phones before hiding them.

“At the end of the day, shop management decided to make a review of the CCTV footage recording and discovered that their guard had stolen the cellphones.

“During questioning, the deceased asked to go relieve himself in the bathroom upstairs. Moments later, they heard gunshots and found him dead, with a bullet to the head.”

The guard shot himself using his service rifle.
