DOZENS of mourners were killed in Iran on Tuesday in a stampede during the funeral for a top military commander who was killed in a US drone strike last week, Iran’s official English-language news channel Press TV reported on Twitter.
Iranian state TV says 35 mourners were killed in a stampede during the funeral procession for Qassem Suleimani in Kerman.
It said the incident, which also injured 48 people, was caused by overcrowding.
Pirhossein Koulivand, the head of Iran’s emergency medical services, confirmed to state TV that the stampede took place.
“Unfortunately, as a result of the stampede, some of our compatriots have been injured and some have been killed during the funeral processions,” he said.
The stampede occurred in the southeastern city of Kerman where commander Qassem Soleimani’s funeral ceremony drew tens of thousands of people on to the streets.
