A school fees receipt making rounds on social media has suggested that Riverton Academy is charging very high school fees.

The receipt shows that one learner paid $106 000 for the first term of 2020. It is however not clear if the money is inclusive of everything that needs to be paid for. See the receipt below.

This is happening when workers’ salaries across sectors have remained peasantry.

The government has warned public schools against raising school fees and also threatened to withdraw licences for private schools which “directly and or indirectly” charge school fees in foreign currency.

Schools, on the other hand, argue that the local currency has been immensely eroded and maintaining last term’s fees will see them struggling to meet their financial obligations.

Observers including South Africa-based academic and researcher Pedzisai Ruhanya have said that the fees are affordable only to the haves while the have nots are being excluded and deprived of their right to education.
