Coronavirus cases in South Africa have increased exponentially from 402 to 554 in less than 24 hours. Health Minister Dr Mkhize confirmed the development in a televised national address this morning. Although no fatalities have been recorded as yet, two people are reported to be in the intensive care unit (ICU) and in critical condition. Dr Makhize also revealed that the number is likely to increase in the following weeks as the country battles to contain the spread of coronavirus which was renamed Covid-19 by the World Health Organisation (WHO).

The new development comes after Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize revealed grim expectations for the country, predicting that over half of the country’s population could suffer from COVID-19 infection. This also comes as neighbouring country, Zimbabwe, recorded its first coronavirus fatality on Monday. The 30-year-old patient had arrived in the country from Newyork, United States of America.
