As more details trickle in about Hopewell Chin’ono’s arrest on Monday, Zimbabwe human Rights Lawyer Beatrice Mthetwa rushed to his house and they found ‘state security agents’ already gone with him.
The lawyer says Chin’ono was ‘abducted’ and they are not sure where they took him without any warrant of arrest.
Eight ‘state security agents’ are alleged to have broken his glass door and gained entry.
“We have just arrived at Hopewell’s house after receiving an SOS that his home has been surrounded by about 8 state security agents and they broke the glass at his door, gained entry and he has been abducted. We are not sure where he has been taken because… they did not produce any warrant”
MDC Alliance is demanding the release of Hopewell Chino’ ono and in a statement said;
We condemn the arrest and persecution of journalist Hopewell Chin’ono and activist Jacob Ngarivhume. Section 67 of the Constitution gives every person the right to challenge the Govt. We demand their freedom & immediate release.
The United States Embassy has also expressed concern over his arrest saying it is undemocratic;
We have learned [Zimbabwe Republic Police] officials are at Hopewell Chin’ono’s home now and are deeply concerned for his welfare.
President @edmnangagwa noted the important role investigative journalists, like @daddyhope, play in shedding light on corruption. Political intimidation of the press has no place in democracies.
David Coltart also added his voice calling this is a sign Zimbabwe is not in a new dispensation;
Any pretence that this is a “new dispensation” has gone. This is just a brutal, paranoid regime, scared of its own shadow, which is now prepared to use blunt instruments against those who are exposing their gross iniquity. It is just a 2nd hand republic #Zimbabwe #PayBackOurMoney
