Police are investigating claims that dead bodies of Covid-19 victims are being smuggled into the country from South Africa.
There are social media claims that Zimbabweans who are succumbing to the virus whilst in South Africa are being brought back home for burial packaged together with groceries.
Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said they had deployed their members to establish correct information.
“We are seeing it on social media, we have not yet received any official report pertaining to the issue.
“As a result, we are looking forward to those with the information to report to us.
“We have currently put our guys on the ground to establish the case.
“We urge those with information to inform us,” he said.
Meanwhile, Permanent Secretary for Information and Publicity Nick Mangwana has expressed concern over smuggling of goods inside coffins citing the risks of spreading covid-19 as well as explains the surge in local cases.
The smuggling of goods hidden as contraband in a coffin carrying the remains of a Covid19 victim is a concern. The people that handle, use or eat such goods are being exposed to the virus. One never knows how prevalent the practice is but this may explain some local transmissions
