One woman was killed and another was wounded Friday afternoon as police were called to reports of shots fired near Hickory Village apartments and came upon a rollover crash in a parking lot at Edison and Hickory roads.
Police were dispatched shortly after 3 p.m. to Hickory Village apartments on reports of shots fired, according to a release from the St. Joseph County Metro Homicide Unit.
Dispatchers began getting emergency calls of a rollover crash in a parking lot in the 3600 block of E. Edison Road. The lot is within the South Bend city limits, and South Bend and Mishawaka police responded to both calls.
Officers found two women who were riding in the overturned vehicle had been shot. One of the women was pronounced dead at a local hospital, police said, while the other was treated for a non-life-threatening gunshot wound.
Metro Homicide Assistant Commander David Wells said late Friday night Kalekeni Lindeire, 37, was taken into custody in connection with the shooting. He is being held without bond in the St. Joseph County Jail.
Officials were withholding the names of the victims in order to notify family.
Dale Britton, 48, who was shopping at the nearby Family Dollar store at the time of the crash, found two children crying at the scene.
“I saw two little kids wandering in and out of cars. They looked dazed, in shock,” he said, adding that they said that someone had been shot.
Britton said he worked at the Cleveland Clinic and had a first-aid kit with him. He sat them down and worked to clean up their cuts. “I was just concerned about the children,” he said.
