Uzalo’s MaMlambo Is The Daughter Of Freedom Fighters
Actress Gugu Gumede is one of the most recognised faces in South Africa thanks to her role as MaMlambo on SABC 1’s hit television series Uzalo.
However, unknown to many, MaMlambo as people now refer to Gumede, actually comes from a well pedigreed and prominent family as her parents are actually former freedom fighters who were involved in the fight against the apartheid regime.
Gumede’s mother is celebrated freedom fighter Zanele kaMagwaza-Msibi. Gumede’s mother is a former South African parliamentarian who served as the Deputy Minister of Science and Technology in the cabinet of Jacob Zuma. Zanele kaMagwaza-Msibi is the President of the National Freedom Party (NFP) and previously served as the chairperson of the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP).
Gugu’s father is the late Inkosi Simon Hulumeni Gumede who was a member of the Inkatha Freedom Party and served as a member of the KwaZulu-Natal legislature. Unfortunately, he died in 2007 following a car accident, when Gugu was around 15 years old.
Speaking about her father’s accident and death in an interview with the Sowetan, Gugu said,
“It was hard when my dad died, but I didn’t really know him. He and my mom had a decent relationship.
“I grew up in a single-parent household. We are a loving and overly sensitive type.
“I’m my mother’s daughter. I don’t accept a lot of nonsense and I’m very stubborn,” says Gumede.
Gugu was born on September 14, 1992, in KwaZulu Natal which makes her 28-years-old, younger than most people think of her character. With her impressive physical transformation, paired with her nuanced performance, the actress has managed to fool fans of the SABC1 soapie into believing she’s a middle-aged woman.
