Till Operators Arrested For Killing Thief over Mazowe

POLICE in Bulawayo have confirmed the arrest of three supermarket employees for murder after bashing a suspected shoplifter to death.

Thabo Dube (19), Magutshwa Pride (23) and Ngonidzashe Mukonyora (29), who are employed as till operators at Hamara Supermarket in Pumula East, are in custody for allegedly killing Mutuma Mbewe (22) for stealing from the store.


NewZimbabwe.com could not immediately establish the nature of goods Mbewe is suspected to have stolen.

Police confirmed the arrest in a post on their Twitter page.

“The till operators were arrested for murder after they assaulted the victim, Mutuma Mbewe (22) on November 17, 2021, in a bush near New Magwegwe. The victim was apprehended and detained by the suspects who are till operators, for shoplifting at Hamara Supermarket, Pumula East, Luveve. The victim escaped from the supermarket and was apprehended by the suspects with help of the public,” police said.

A badly injured Mutuma reportedly died the following day while in admission at Mpilo Hospital, because of the beating.

Police under a social media campaign #notomurder continue appealing to members of the public to desist from taking the law into their own hands.
