Music legend Zexie Manatsa battles cancer

VETERAN musician, Zexie Manatsa had a nightmarish Christmas Day holiday after being admitted to hospital following the relapse of his cancer.

The 78-year-old, who was diagnosed with cancer in August last year, was admitted for five days, giving his family and friends quite a scare.

According to health experts, multiple myeloma is a cancer that forms in a type of white blood cells called plasma, which fight infections by making antibodies that recognise and attack germs.

Studies have shown that in multiple myeloma, cancerous plasma cells accumulate in the bone marrow and crowd out healthy cells.

His eldest son, Green, confirmed the veteran crooner’s ill-health, saying he was now recovering at home.

“Our father was admitted to hospital from the 20th to the 25th of December last year. He had a relapse of his condition, which saw him being admitted for a couple of days, while receiving treatment. The situation was bad but we are grateful that the Lord is in control.”

Green, who now doubles as a producer and session instrumentalist, dispelled reports they were neglecting their father’s welfare.

“It’s unfortunate that people have been spreading lies that we are not taking care of our father at a time when he is unwell.

“As a family, we have been doing our best to ensure that our father gets treatment and we won’t stop assisting him. It’s very unfortunate when people are spreading lies but how can we neglect our own father?”

Green said the legend was recovering at home.

“For now, all I can only say is that our father is at home. He is being monitored by the family and medical experts,” said Green.

Green said he was helping his siblings to keep their father’s legacy intact.

“I have been spending my time in the studio as well as helping Tendai and Selmor each time they need my services.

“All my siblings are musicians, so I help each and every one, whenever they need my expertise. We are also working on reviving the music of our father. I’m really glad with the progress that they (Selmor and Tendai) are making, which shows that they are on the right path.

“We are also grateful for the support that fans have been giving them during live shows and we hope they will continue rallying behind them in 2022.”

Zexie made history when he filled Rufaro Stadium during his wedding day on August 25, 1979, with Stella Manatsa.

The couple is blessed with six boys — Green, who was born in 1975, Aaron (1977), Tendai (1979), twin brothers Freedom and Shingi (1982) and Zexie Junior (1986).

He is famed for all-time classics such as Chipo Chiroorwa, Chechule Wavala Bottom, Chivaraidze and Tea Hobvu among other chart-toppers.

He was also a darling of football fans when he penned songs for Highlanders, CAPS United, Dynamos and Zimbabwe Saints.
