7 Armed robbers make off with US$380k during raid on fuel depot

Armed robbers seized US$380,000 during a raid on a fuel depot in Harare, police said.

Details of the May 4 incident were not revealed until Wednesday.

Police spokesman Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said seven men armed with assault rifles stormed ZX Fuels in Southerton at around 2AM and captured four employees.

“The suspects blasted the first safe and stole US$2,316 and Z$11,551. They blasted their way into another office with a bullet-proof glass where they stole Mozambique road toll books worth US$55,075 and a safe containing US$378,057,” Nyathi said.

On May 6, police said US$300,000 was taken when three men armed with a pistol stormed a property in Newlands, Harare, and subdued the security guard at around 4AM.

The security guard was tied with a rope before the raiders made off with a safe containing US$300,000.

Socialite Acie Lumumba, real name William Gerald Mutumanje, said the stolen money belonged to him.

More and more Zimbabweans are keeping money at home and business premises to avoid high bank charges and fears of losing their balances like what happened in 2008 and 2019.
