Man kills friend over pool table tokens

A SHURUGWI man was fatally struck by his friend, with a wooden stick, following a misunderstanding over pool table tokens.

Knowledge Mtombeni, 34, of Chirorodziva Heights, Alaska, appeared before Chinhoyi High Court Judge, Justice Philda Muzofa, charged with murder.

After a full trial, Mtombeni was acquitted of murder but found guilty of aggravated assault.

He was sentenced to 24 months in prison while six months were suspended for good behaviour.

Mtombeni will serve an effective 18 months in jail.

The deceased is Prince Bezvo, 34, of Mliswa Village, under Chief Banga, Shurugwi.

Prosecuting, Temptation Maromo, told the court that on October 1 last year, Mtombeni and Bezvo were at Alaska Dolomite Compound Beerhall, drinking beer.

The duo then went to a nearby tuck shop where Mtombeni bought tokens from the cashier, Hazel Mudyavanhu, for $20, and played with Bezvo.

At about 5:30pm, the now deceased, gave an unidentified person $10 to buy another token from the cashier.

The man did not buy the token as the money was not enough.

Incensed by the cashier’s refusal to give him a token, Bezvo assaulted Mudyavanhu, with a pool stick, before he produced a knife and pushed the tuck shop door open, threatening to stab her.

He was pushed away from the door by Mtombeni.

This did not go down well with him, and the two engaged in a fight.

Mtombeni picked a stick, which he used to assault Bezvo, on the forehead and he fell on his back.

The court heard Bezvo bled profusely from the head. Mtombeni struck him with an empty beer bottle, searched his pockets and stole a knife, and US$10, before fleeing from the scene.

He fled to Marshland, Norton, where he disposed two Colombian knives, one belonging to him and the other to the now deceased.

On October 3 last year, the body of Bezvo was discovered by Tererai Chatikobo, an employee of Jiang Shan, who was on his way to Alaska Dolomite, and a report was made to the police.

The court heard police attended the scene and recovered a blood stained stick.

A brown wallet, near his body, and a blood-stained sun hat and a broken Eagle Lager empty bottle, were found about 52 metres, away from the body.

On November 4, 2021, the remains of Bezvo were taken to Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals for a post mortem.

It concluded that death was due to a skull fracture and blunt force trauma.

On November 12, Mtombeni was arrested. – H-metro
