Jonasi Kasamba, a major member of Alick Macheso’s Orchestra Mberikwazvo, will be missing when they launch on their international tour, which begins Saturday night. Kasamba lost his mother and has since returned to his own country, the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Macheso kicks off his tour, which will take him through Asia, Australia, and Europe, tonight at Secret Lounge, Excelsior Hotel, Al Barsha in Dubai. Gemma Griffiths will be by his side.
Tich Makahamadze, the group’s spokesperson, confirmed the chanter’s absence to ZTN. “Yes, Jonasi will miss the tour.” He lost his mother in the DRC, and we have allowed him to travel and grieve her.
“We are praying for him and his family, and we would have loved to be with him during these tough times, but it’s unfortunate that his death occurred while we are on tour,” Makahamadze added.
The hypeman was an essential member of Macheso’s band, and Makahamadze acknowledged that his services will be missed. “It’s no secret that Jonasi adds a certain mood to the band; it’s his job.” We will mourn him, but work must continue.
“Those who are available will perform the work,” Makahamadze stated. “We were scheduled to begin the tour Friday night in Dubai, but due to circumstances beyond our control, we had to postpone it to Saturday (tonight).”
Macheso will perform in Perth, Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane between August 12 and 20 in Australia. On August 28, he will conclude his trip in Leicester, United Kingdom.
