JUDGMENT ON RUSHWAYA WILL BE READ TODAY

Henrietta Rushwaya, head of the Zimbabwe Miners Federation (ZMF), is charged with bribing an airport official as she tried to transport 6kg of gold out of the country in October 2020.
Rushwaya’s lawyer, Peter Patisani, said she never offered anyone a bribe because she had no intention of smuggling gold.

Rushwaya told the court she brought the wrong bag to the airport.

Mrs. Mapiye rejected her appeal for release at the end of the State case and ordered her to explain what she did after airport officials found gold.

Rushwaya said she never provided a bribe to smuggle gold as a gold buying agent for Fidelity Printers and Refiners.

Rushwaya told the court that if she wanted to smuggle gold, she wouldn’t have volunteered to walk through security after being taken to the VIP zone.

She told airport officials, including Owen Sibanda, that she chose the wrong bag from home.

Rushwaya stated she cooperated with police upon arrest.

She told the court that police went to take the other luggage when she was in remand detention.

Police have had the two suitcases since 2020, according to Rushwaya. Herald
