80 murders recorded in South Africa every day

Statistics gathered by leading South African digital television channel Newzroom Afrika have revealed that around 80 people are killed in the Rainbow Nation every day.

Crime rate is on the rise in South Africa, as evidenced by the growing number of murder cases reported regularly, fuelling fear that the country could become a mafia state.

According to Newzroom Afrika, over 7500 people were murdered in South Africa in the last 3 months of 2022, translating to an average of 80 people being killed on a daily basis.

In comparison, the United Nations (UN) has recorded fewer deaths even in the Russia-Ukraine war since it began over a year ago.

South African Police Minister Bheki Cele, admits the statistics are worrying, but there is a plan. He said:

It’s a bad situation that needs to be corrected, and at a certain given point, South Africans have had better conditions than what we see now.

The South African cabinet has just passed a document called Intergrated Crime Prevention Strategy, where it says it is across the government that the crime will have to be reduced, rather than the police alone.

The murder of rapper AKA, has generated a lot of debate in South Africa, with opposition Economic Fredoom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema publicly calling for Cele’s resignation.
