Lynn Forbes Opens Up About Unhelpful Comments After Son AKA’s Tragic Death

It has now been two weeks since the death of rapper Kiernan “AKA” Forbes, but his mother, Lynn Forbes, is still mourning and struggling to come to terms with his tragic passing. AKA was fatally shot on 10th February in Durban, along with his friend Tebello “Tibz” Motsoane, while his bodyguard sustained injuries.

In an emotional video montage posted on Instagram, Lynn shared memories of her son and opened up about the pain of losing him. She also expressed frustration with some of the unhelpful comments people have offered in an attempt to comfort her during this difficult time.

Lynn admitted that she misses her son greatly, and some days she feels like a warrior while on others, she is a broken mess. She shared that the most helpful thing anyone has said to her since her son’s passing is, “Whatever you are feeling, and whenever you are feeling it….it’s OK.”

However, she cautioned against saying things like “How are you feeling?” or “Be strong” to a grieving person, as these comments may be well-intended but ultimately unhelpful. Instead, she urged people to offer genuine support and understanding to those who are grieving, and to avoid cliched platitudes that can sometimes come across as dismissive.

Lynn also listed the most unhelpful well-intended comments to avoid saying to a grieving person

• How are you feeling?
• At least he didn’t suffer
• It was God’s plan
• God never gives you more than you can handle
• Be strong.
