Top South African Hotels For The Super Rich

South Africa has two hotels and two safari lodges that are incredibly popular with rich South Africans, Europeans, and Americans.

According to the New World Wealth Report by Henley and Partners, South Africa has roughly 140,000 high-net-worth individuals (HNWIs) who travel widely across Africa.

The report, compiled by Henley & Partners and New World Wealth, also said that over 300,000 millionaires from mostly France, Germany, Switzerland, the UK, and the USA regularly visit African countries on vacation.

Therefore, the luxury hotel sector is essential in bringing substantial foreign exchange into Africa.

The sector also creates a plethora of good-paying jobs for hoteliers, chefs, game rangers, and other support staff – much of this income is seasonal and in the form of tips.

The report added that HNWI families also travel to Cairo in Egypt, Livingstone in Zambia, Marrakech in Morocco, the Masai Mara National Reserve in Kenya, the Okavango Delta in Botswana, the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania, Sharm el-Sheikh in Egypt, and Etosha National Park in Namibia.

Gorilla-tracking safaris are also growing in popularity in Rwanda and Uganda.

The report said that the following hotels are incredibly popular for HNWIs visiting Africa:

  • The Oyster Box, South Africa
  • Ellerman House, South Africa
  • Royal Mansour, Morocco
  • Four Seasons Resort Sharm El Sheikh,  Egypt
  • Royal Livingstone, Zambia

The report said that the Oyster Box overlooks the Indian Ocean on the Umhlanga beachfront. The hotel dates back to the 1950s and was a popular destination for Johannesburgers to spend their summers. The hotel was renovated in 2007 by Red Carnation Hotels into its current luxurious state.

The Ellerman is in Bantry Bay, Cape Town and has views of the Atlantic Ocean. According to the report, the hotel only has 13 rooms, making it a hotspot for the rich and famous due to its privacy and tranquillity.

There is also a host of safari lodges across Africa that are popular with HNWIs
