Truth revealed why DJ Maphorisa beat up Thuli Phongolo
As more information becomes available, it has been revealed that DJ Maphorisa attacked Thuli Phongolo out of a romantic interest.
DJ Maphorisa, real name Themba Sekowe, was detained for assault on May 7, 2023, after he beat and choked Thuli Phongolo following a disagreement.
According to reports, a confrontation between the two disc jockeys took place inside a club where Phori was performing. The Izolo hitmaker lost his passion after Thuli questioned him about the matter the next day, and he slapped, punched, and strangled the former Generations: The Legacy actress.
Thuli then opened a case of gender-based violence against Maphorisa, leading to his arrest. A day later, the actress withdrew the case, and her boyfriend was released on R4 000 bail.
Sunday World has spoken to a source close to DJ Maphorisa and Thuli Phongolo, who revealed that the Ba Straata hitmaker bashed the actress because of a man at the club who was showing interest in her.
“The man apparently bought expensive drinks at the table where Thuli was also sitting. He was balling, and somehow, he made advances to Thuli and promised to send her R40 000 on the spot to show off. Maphorisa found out and got angry because he does a lot of things for Thuli. That is disrespectful. So, he threw a tantrum, which later escalated to the assault when they got home.”
After opening the case, Thuli started feeling bad about it and even tried to withdraw it on 7 May, hours after making a report.
“She was made to open the case by her mother. She later regretted it and then arrived at the police station at night when Maphorisa was arrested and tried to withdraw the case so that Maphorisa could go home, but the police refused,” said the source.”
DJ Maphorisa and Thuli Phongolo shrugged off requests for comments by the media.
