Mother in law forces couple to sign a contract to have only one child in exchange for paying for their wedding

Imagine having someone else cover the entire cost of your extravagant wedding while at the same time handling all the planning and all that other nitty gritty details that usually end up driving brides up the wall?

Sounds like the perfect way to have a stress free wedding. Especially if the bride, like me, can’t be bothered with event planning and keeping calm during all the wedding madness.
However, there’s a twist.

You are required to sign a contract stating that after the wedding, you and your husband are only allowed to have one child.

I know what you’re thinking… what in the world?

A Reddit bride-to-be took to the chat group to explain how she was approached and subsequently offered by her mother-in-law (MIL) to not only pay for the entire wedding, but also do all the planning.

“My fiancé’s mother has been generous enough to foot the bill for the entire wedding since she’s mainly the one who wanted it to be a large affair anyway,” she said.

“I’ve let her have free reign with the planning and she’s allowed to invite whoever she wants as I don’t have that many family members, and my fiancé keeps his friend circle very small.”

The future bride then explains how she and her hubby had originally planned to elope but at the MIL’s wishes, agreed on having the lavish event.

She then explains how the planning and everything was running smoothly, until, to both her and her partners shock, her mother-in-law presented her with a contract stipulating that she was only allowed one child after the wedding.

This or she backs out of paying for the wedding.

“As the wedding is getting closer, MIL suddenly presented us with a contract stating that I am only allowed to have one child and must immediately get on contraception after his/her birth. I have literally never heard of anyone being in a remotely similar situation to this before and I am pretty sure it has no legal standing at all,” she wrote.

The bride then explains that she hadn’t put much thought into how many kids she wants to have, but naturally, she doesn’t want her decision to be made as a result of a dictatorship.

She also says that while she didn’t exactly want the big wedding, a lot of planning and arrangements have already been paid for.

“This wedding has gotten extremely expensive (in the hundred thousands), and while we are grateful, my fiancé and I were planning on eloping to begin with since we couldn’t afford it and had no desire to have a large celebration.”

She also explains that her “surprised” hubby to be thinks that his mom will “probably get over it” and love all their kids regardless.

Meanwhile Reddit users were not as understanding.

Most of them advised the young bride-to-be to elope and tell her mother-in-law to shove her unreasonable contract.

“Cancel it all and walk away. Elope… and do not let her control anything else in your life. She is ridiculous and can get bent,” wrote one user.

While this user wrote, “If I was in your shoes, and facing a narc (which you are), the answer is to not give them an inch. … just keep it completely unemotional and let her know that she is not an authority in your life, and she will not have any control over you.”

What would you do if you were in this future brides shoes? Sign the contract or call off the lavish wedding?
