Self-exiled former Zimbabwe cabinet member Saviour Kasukuwere has successfully filed his nomination papers to contest for the 2023 presidential elections.
Kasukuwere who went on the run after the 2017 coup and camped in South Africa has been making headlines after he threw his hat in the ring to contest against his former party ZANU PF presidential candidate President Emmerson Mnangagwa.
His chief election agent Jacqueline Sande successfully filed his nomination papers amidst rumours that the politician is in the country.
However, she refused to comment on Kasukuwere’s whereabouts preferring rather to say that he will be on the ground for campaigns. Speaking to journalists outside the court she said;
“We have managed to successfully file the nomination papers on behalf of our client and after we should wait to hear from Saviour Kasukuwere himself as to the roll-out plan for his campaign but it should be quick starting anytime soon,” Sande said.
“His whereabouts I cannot divulge but he is going to be available to campaign for himself because as you know as a presidential candidate you have to hit the ground running, you need to meet your electorate and sell them your ideology, your proposals and get them to vote for you, so, he is not going to campaign outside the country he is going to come”, she added.
According toNewsHawks, Kasukuwere did not fly back home through Airlink flight No.4Z104 even though his name was on the passenger manifest.
Passenger 34 – as he was on the list – didn’t fly and land in Harare.
The NewsHawks claims that some passengers on that list confirmed Kasukuwere was not on that flight.
Kasukuwere briefly returned to Zimbabwe in 2018 and was arrested on corruption charges. These were later dismissed by the Harare magistrate’s court, but not before he left the country again.
In October 2020, the government sought Kasukuwere’s extradition from South Africa to face criminal charges after issuing a warrant for his arrest.
