The Tanzanian government has made it illegal for men to plait their hair.
Omar Adam, the executive secretary of the Council of Arts, Film, and Culture in Zanzibart this ban is intended to preserve the cultural and traditional values of Zanzibar.
Those who violate this ban may be fined one million Tanzanian shillings (equivalent to Ksh. 58,000 or roughly R 400), imprisoned for six months, or both.
“Police will arrest all men who plait hair; this is not acceptable by the arts council, and there is a special permit for plaiting hair, which is Sh1 million, and we have set that price in order to deter them.”
“Now it is your choice to either pay 1 million shillings to plait or buy a razor to shave,” said Adam,
Adam claims that although the law has been around since 2015, it has not yet been put into effect. However, he did not specify whether it had an impact on visitors from other countries.
