Gospel Singer Diva Mafunga’s Body Missing From Grave, ‘Eaten By Witches’

In a very disturbing story, the grave of a famous religious singer – Diva Mafunga – is said to have been tampered with and it appears that “people sat on top of it” recently.

Diva was buried in his hometown in Mt Darwin under Mambo Chiswiti.

Diva, who died at the age of 53, was from Chief Charowa Chisodza and went missing on July 4 in a road accident between Kwekwe and Kadoma.

After being buried at the cemetery in Chisodza, the relatives say that the next day, Diva’s grave was found with a deep hole dug at the top and on top of it there was evidence that someone had sat there, some of the soil had crumbled, and the other one was taken.

Mr. Malvin Mapunga (69), who is Diva’s brother, confirmed the story of the discovery of his brother’s grave to Kwayedza saying that he discovered this a day after burying him when he returned to see the grave.

“My younger brother died by accident and we brought his body here to the village and buried it at our cemetery called Chisodza near the river Chisodza. For the future, we went to the grave as required by traditional customs to look, and we found a grave dug with a deep hole at the top.

“On the top of the grave, it appeared that there was a place where people had stepped on it, and some of the soil fell down and some of it was carried away.” We don’t know if this was done by witches or by whom,” says Mr. Malvin Mafunga.

They say that the discovery of the grave has left their family living in fear as they do not know why it was done.

According to Mr Malvin Mafunga, he brought this matter to the village headman, but he was unable to go to Mambo Chiswiti and report it to the police.

“There are reports that we hear from the public that Diva’s coffin was found outside and there was no body, saying that he was eaten by witches. But we still don’t know because we only found an excavation on top of the grave that shows that when someone sat on top, the soil crumbled, and some was carried away.

“Some say that his body was stolen and taken to sangomas in Mozambique, but we have no proof of that,” they say.

They say they did not get a chance to check to see if their brother was buried in the coffin or if the body is still in the grave.

“Suspiciously, we say that sometimes this was done by people who killed Diva as a way to kill his spirit or by witches. We haven’t gone yet to consult what happened as some of our relatives were already gone, including our in-laws were Diva married, and also his children who had also left just after we buried him. Apart from that, our brother Steady Mafunga is sick, so we think we will go when we get together and share his belongings.”

Mr. Malvin Mapunga says he has many questions about his brother’s death, since the accident and the exhumation of his grave.

Mr. Denias Mafunga (53), who is Diva’s twin, also confirms the story of the exhumation of this grave.

He says Diva saw mysterious insects in his house when he went to the village. They are also not sure if this is the work of witches.
