‘Compose your own song’: Penny Penny Angry at DJ Black Coffee

Tsonga disco music legend Penny Penny, real name Eric Kulani Giyani Nkovani is furiously mad at DJ Black Coffee for remixing his song without his permission.

Penny Penny feels that DJ Black Coffee is exploiting him after a video emerged of him playing his 1990s song Hayi Ka Mina Hee (Remake) in Miami.

“You DJ guys that don’t know how to sing, stop playing with our minds. Coffee, stop playing my song,” he says. “That is my song. Don’t disrespect me, stop the rubbish you are doing.”

The artist says that producers and DJs should ask for permission to remix songs. “If you want to use anybody’s song, consult. Don’t be a fake artist,” he adds.

“You cannot remix my song without me telling you. You’re doing your own thing. Don’t play with my gift. Compose your own song, delete that rubbish now. Coffee, whatever!” he says angrily. Black Coffee could not be reached for comment.

Amid the song saga, Penny Penny is still dealing with another matter of alleged exploitation by SeMamo Productions responsible for shooting his reality TV show.

This is after he could not reach an agreement regarding funds with the company.

In a previous interview, Penny Penny told ZiMoja that the company “stole his money” and is in the process of looking for another production house to tell his story.

“They exploited me. They paid me R300 000 for the season, the same for season two. Then we negotiated that they give me R400 000 for seasons three and four. They did not include money for my VAT and when my auditor realised that I approached them to pay the VAT because I was unaware that it was not included, they refused.”

Papa Penny said many other occurrences made him unhappy. “They were not paying my family up until season three. My mother died on season four without having been paid. My mother died without receiving her money from the production company.”
