I will make sure Zimbabwe won’t be readmitted into the Commonwealth: Prof Stephen Chan after deportation
British scholar Professor Stephen Chan said that he is going to spoil Zimbabwe’s hopes of ever getting admitted into the Commonwealth after he was unceremoniously deported from the country upon landing.
Known for his apparent criticism of the ruling party and endorsement of the opposition Citizen’s Coalition for Change (CCC), the country’s security swiftly deported him upon landing.

A government official in the Information and Publicity department, Nick Mangwana stated the reasons why Prof Chan was deported;
Govt wishes to confirm that British Academic, Dr Stephen Chan was refused entry into the country after the Immigration Officer was not satisfied with his reason for seeking entry which he said was for some Karate related activities. We confirm that he has not been arrested.
The disgruntled scholar, however, gave his side of the story saying that he wasn’t given any reason why he was being deported.
The comments by the officials who refused me entry to Zimbabwe are untrue. They never asked me anything. I never mentioned karate at any time. In fact we said little. I was escorted off one plane, had paperwork issued, then escorted back onto another one.

Following the embarrassing event, Professor Chan made a vow that he will be contacting London about the treatment he got from Zimbabwean authorities.
Well, Zimbabwe wants to be readmitted to the Commonwealth. I used to be a member of the Commonwealth Secretariat. One of my first calls back in London will be to the Commonwealth Secretary-General, Baroness Scotland. Doesn’t the security apparatus in Zimbabwe do ANY homework?
To Hell With The Commonwealth
Zimbabweans reacted to Chan’s threats saying that if the body can be influenced by his voice then it is not worth a club to be joined. Here are a few responses;

It sounds you feel depressed. I feel your pain! 😜. Zimbabwe has humbled many. Once there was Bush, Blair, Obama, Gordon Brown and as many leaders in Europe, Aussie, Canada etc who have come and gone. They all fell by the mouth when it comes to Zimbabwe. We’re not like any other.

ZANU PF is flawed and clearly blocked you because they are used to boot lickers and cutting off anyone who criticise them but to say commonwealth will block a whole Zimbabwe because Chan was denied visa to observe elections is sounding like the ZANU PF beast we are fighting…..
