CCC MPs At New Parliament For Swearing In {Pictures}

Zimbabwe’s main opposition party, the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) elected Members of Parliament today arrived at the New Parliament in Mount Hampden for a swearing-in ceremony despite threats of boycott.

Zanu PF has 136 elected MPs plus 33 for women’s quota and seven for youth quota bringing the total to 176 for the ruling party while CCC has 73 elected MPs, 27 women’s quota and three for the youth quota bringing their total to 103.

A total of 279 MPs are expected to be sworn in today but the CCC last week hinted on a possible boycott citing irregularities that led to manipulation of results, an allegation scoffed at by the ruling Zanu PF party.

Clerk of Parliament Kennedy Chokuda said all was set for the swearing in ceremony.

“We are very well prepared, otherwise l would not have gazetted the swearing in,” Chokuda told Business Times yesterday.

On how they will proceed if CCC boycotts, Chokuda said: “It depends on who comes because we have invited everyone. lf everyone comes we expect every duly elected member to be sworn in.”

“I don’t speak on behalf of parties. I deal with things in Parliament so l wouldn’t know what the parties are planning,” Chokuda said.

The MPs, Chokuda said, will be sworn in Harare and not Mt Hampden which houses the new multi-million-dollar Parliament.
