Zahara’s brother, Junior Mkutukana reportedly opened an inquest into her death, according to Sunday World. The singer passed away after being hospitalised for several days. The publication reports that the inquest was taken down by Constable Modupe and checked by Warrant Officer Netshiunda.

“The complainant, Mr Mkutukana, alleged that on 2023-12-11 at about 12:00 he was at Roodepoort when Bulelwa Mkutukana complained of stomach pains. She was taken to Olievedale Netcare Hospital and was declared dead (sic),” read the inquest according to the publication.

The publication also reports that the singer’s family suspects she could have been poisoned by her enemies.

Zahara passed away on Monday 11 December at a private hospital, according to EWN. The cause of the singer’s death has not yet been revealed. However, BBC reports liver complications.

Arts and Culture Minister Zizi Kodwa confirmed that singer Zahara had passed away via a tweet on Monday 11 December.

“I am very saddened by the passing of @ZaharaSA. My deepest condolences to the Mkutukana family and the South African music industry. Government has been with the family for some time now. Zahara and her guitar made an incredible and lasting impact in South African music,” read the tweet.

This comes after reports of the singer being admitted into hospital as she suffered “physical pains”.
