South Africa takes Israel to the ICJ claiming genocide in Gaza
South Africa has taken Israel to the International Court of Justice, accusing it of crimes of genocide against Palestinians in Gaza.
The accusations are related to the recent conflict and are part of broader claims of Israeli oppression over the years.
South Africa argues that there is a pattern of conduct and intention amounting to a plausible claim of genocidal acts. Israel has denied the accusations and, unusually, engaged with the court to defend itself.
The court’s preliminary order could come in weeks, but a full case may take years to be heard.
Both pro-Israel and pro-Palestine protests took place outside the court during the hearing.
