‘Nando’s and lights’: Prince Kaybee Slams DJ Maphorisa on owning music masters

Prince Kaybee addresses DJ Maphorisa’s claim on owning artists’ masters.

Computer, electricity, and studio – these are just some of the things belonging to DJ Maphorisa that, if used by an artist, will warrant the deejay to label your work as his own.

The award-winning deejay and record producer shared his proclamation on Instagram Live and stated that new artists need to educate themselves about the happenings of the entertainment industry.

“When you record music on my computer, my studio, with my electricity. That sh*t is mine. It belongs to me,” stated DJ Maphorisa. “You must understand when you work in someone’s studio, that sh*t is not yours. Go buy your studio, buy plug-ins, FruityLoops [a digital audio software now known as FL Studio], a microphone and whatever, then make music and release it. Then those will be your masters.”

A snippet of the recorded video made its way to other social media platforms, sparking many memes and comments.

One of those comments came from Prince Kaybee, who said on X (formerly Twitter), “Growing up, I changed my beliefs. I now believe that working together on creative projects is about the IP sharing. So, someone must write a song, produce a beat and craft it and you own everything because you bought Nando’s and lights?”

Some social media users in Prince Kaybee’s comment section argued that this was no different to what big corporations are doing, while others participated in the memes.
