‘You did nothing for me when I was in prison’: Sikhala angry at opposition politicians

Release of Job Sikhala from prison brought with it joy and fanfare but, 24 hours later some harsh political realities are manifesting as he has expressed his anger at his supposed ‘friends’ for abandoning him.

Sikhala openly says he wants to distance himself from politicians as they did nothing for him while he suffered in Chikurubi Maximum prison for two years.

Speaking to SABC, Sikhala thanked his family members, a few friends, and his lawyers who stood by him during his ‘suffering’.

He also needs time to reflect;

“I also would like to say it very openly that neither of the current protagonists in the quarrel and conflict within the opposition ranks did absolutely nothing about me when I was under incarceration. So there is nothing much that would interest me in their conflict. These are the people who neglected me whilst I was in prison, they have never raised a finger. There is nothing, one, which can be pointed out that they did for the sake of my freedom out of prison. It was only left to my family and close friends and allies for them to fight for my freedom,” he said

Meanwhile, former Harare East Member of Parliament (MP), Tendai Biti, claims that he is still the Vice President of the opposition Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC). In an interview with nrtvZimbabwe, he affirmed his membership in the CCC and stated that he has no plans to leave the party.

Biti expressed uncertainty about Nelson Chamisa’s resignation, saying he had only read about it in the newspapers and had not received any formal communication. He said:

I have just read things in the newspapers. So I don’t know what’s happening. I don’t know whether those letters are genuine or not. But speaking for myself, I am Tendai Biti, the Vice President of the Citizens Coalition for Change and I am going nowhere.

Asked why he was contradicting Nelson Chamisa, the former party leader, who said there were no such positions in the party, Biti, a former Finance Minister said:

I don’t know who you are referring to, all I know is that there was a congress in 2019 and that Congress has not been reversed by any processes. So I am a proud leader in the CCC.
