The driver was arrested and placed in the police van but when the vehicle came to the remote-controlled gate at the police station, the suspect shot himself. He died in the van, according to a source at the scene.

The source told the media that he was amazed that the suspect was arrested without being thoroughly searched.

Ekurhuleni metro police spokesperson Thabiso Makgato confirmed that a 32-year-old male killed himself outside the Kempton Park police station.

“The Independent Police Investigative Directorate was called and took over the scene. Investigations are still in the preliminary phase and is sub judice,” she said.
