Man arrested with cocaine at State House

A 29-year-old man, Nigel Kunyeya, was apprehended and charged with unlawful possession of dangerous drugs after being discovered with cocaine at the State House.

During a court hearing on Friday, Prosecutor Rufaro Chonzi disclosed that on May 22, 2024, at approximately 7:50 AM, Kunyeya, a resident of Mabelreign, Harare, arrived at the State House in an unregistered black and white Toyota Fortuner. His purported reason for the visit was to request an audience with President Emmerson Mnangagwa to discuss personal matters.

Kunyeya’s behavior raised suspicion among the police officers stationed at the gate, leading them to conduct a search of him and his vehicle. The search yielded a sachet of cocaine and nine empty sachets with cocaine residue, all found in the right pocket of his jacket. No other incriminating items were discovered in the vehicle.

Subsequently, Kunyeya and the confiscated cocaine were transported to CID Drugs Harare for further investigation. A preliminary drug field test, carried out in Kunyeya’s presence, confirmed the substance as cocaine, weighing approximately 0.42 grams with a street value of ZiG520.

During the court proceedings, Magistrate Dennis Mangosi probed Kunyeya about his intentions. Kunyeya asserted that he was only there to schedule an appointment on behalf of another individual and denied any intention of meeting the President. He also disclaimed ownership of the vehicle in question.

Kunyeya is slated to appear in court again on May 27.
