Internationally renowned actress Connie Chiume has passed away after being hospitalized. Connie, well-known for her roles in Gomora, Black Panther, Black is King, Zone 14, and Gomora, has sadly passed at the age of 72.
The Chiume family’s recent Instagram post confirms the actress’s passing at the Garden City Hospital. The cause of death is currently unknown, and the family has stated that further details will be communicated later.
“The Chiume family regrets informing you of the passing of the internationally acclaimed award-winning actress Connie Chiume. [We] ask for privacy during this difficult period. The family will communicate further details,” said the statement.
Connie began her acting career in the early 80s by portraying Thembi in the series Inkom’Edla Yodwa. She later received a South African Film and Television Award (SAFTA) for Best Actress in a Drama Series in 2000.

Her defining moment on local television was playing Stella Moloi in SABC 1’s Zone 14, earning her a third SAFTA. She also appeared in the 2018 Marvel Universe film Black Panther alongside the late actor Chadwick Boseman, Lupita Nyong’o, and Michael B. Jordan, among others.
Connie Chiume also starred in local shows like Rhythm City, Gomora and Blessers.
She was acknowledged for her role as Mam Sonto, a famous drug dealer who resided in Alexandra, on Mzansi Magic’s Gomora.
She dies as a nominated outstanding actress on the Royal Soap Awards for her role of Sonto.
Since the statement’s release, internet users have filled the comment sections with condolences for Connie Chiume’s family.
Rapper Priddy Ugly commented: “Deepest and sincerest condolences, to her family and loved ones.”
