What happened in Rushinga

The police unveiled that on the fateful night of the tragedy, Corporal Ncube and a colleague entered Chikuni Bottle Store at Rushinga Business Centre. Both soldiers were dressed in army fatigues and visibly armed with rifles, which reportedly caused discomfort among the patrons.

Further details reveal that Justice Makiwa, aged 33, and Victor Mufaro Dzowa, a 38-year-old CIO operative, were outside the bottle store, near Makiwa’s Toyota Fortuner. An argument broke out between Makiwa and Ncube, leading to the soldier cocking his rifle and shooting Makiwa in the head. Ncube then turned the weapon on Dzowa, who was attempting to intervene, fatally wounding him in the abdomen.

Inspector Munemo Munetsi, also present at the scene, was injured in the attack but managed to survive after receiving medical treatment.

After the initial shootings, Ncube returned to the army barracks where he lived and shot his girlfriend in the head while she was asleep. He then took his own life by shooting himself in the neck.

The police report describes the grim scene they discovered: Makiwa’s body was found near his car, covered with a pink cloth, and bleeding from a head wound. Dzowa was located seven meters away, with a gunshot wound to the abdomen.

At the barracks, Ncube’s girlfriend was found on the bed, covered by a blanket, with severe head injuries, while Ncube’s body lay nearby with the rifle between his legs.
