Mamelodi Sundowns appoints Manqoba Mngqithi as new coach

South African football club Mamelodi Sundowns have reportedly appointed Manqoba Mngqithi as their head coach on Wednesday.

This come after the 52-year-old signed a new four-year-old contract with the Tshwane giants. Mngqithi was a caretaker coach since July when Masandawana parted ways with their head coach Rulani Mokwena. The Kwa-Zulu Natal-born coach was in charge during the club’s pre-season and again he was on the touchline when Sundowns defeated Polokwane City last weekend in the MTN8.

According to Soccer Laduma, Manqoba Mngqithi is now Downs head coach having signed a new four-year deal. His agent Mike Makaab told the publication that the contract was signed after months of talks. At one point, the former Golden Arrows coach was linked to Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs.

Manqoba Mngqithi finally takes over as head coach

“Yes, he has signed. I am sure the club will make an announcement soon,” Makaab told Soccer Laduma.

Mngqithi will now officially take over as head coach of Sundowns with Steve Komphela and Romain Folz as his assistants. Last month, he refused to answer questions regarding his role at the club

“The question is right, but you’re asking the wrong person. I don’t know guys, but I can advise you to say ‘Coach Manqoba’.

“We must move away from this obsession of positions guys. This is killing our country in many ways. Positions are not the most important thing,” he said.

This will be the first time Manqoba Mngqithi has taken over as the sole head coach since leaving AmaZulu. The team will look to defend their league title when the Betway Premiership starts next month
