Miss South Africa ratings boost amid controversy

The recent Miss South Africa pageant broadcast received a lot of attention and engagement from viewers. Hosted by Bonang Matheba, the ceremony attracted 1.25 million viewers, which was higher than the previous year’s numbers.

The live broadcast had an impressive peak of 1.7 million Average Minute Rating (AMR), surpassing the peak of 1.08 million in 2023.

While the viewership increased, there was a slight decline in audience share compared to the previous year. In 2023, the pageant had a 2.5 audience rating with a 10% audience share, but this year’s broadcast had the same average rating with a decreased audience share of 8.5%. However, it’s important to note that this decline in share is due to a broader increase in television viewership across different channels during the same time frame, rather than a lack of interest.

Miss South Africa Finalist Adetshina Controversy

The pageant was not without controversy, particularly surrounding the treatment of one of the top 10 finalists, Adetshina Chidimma. Chidimma, who has Nigerian and Mozambican roots and was born in South Africa, was forced out of the competition due to bullying, sparking public outcry. The controversy deepened when it was revealed that Chidimma’s exit from the pageant was linked to her mother’s alleged involvement in identity fraud, as highlighted by the Minister of Home Affairs.

Mia Le Roux Wins

Despite these challenges, Mia Le Roux, a hearing-impaired contestant, claimed the title of Miss South Africa. This win showcased diversity and inclusivity, highlighting the importance of representation and empowerment in the pageant industry.

Reports of Chidimma’s attempted suicide following the intense social media scrutiny that followed her departure from the competition shed light on the broader issue of mental health and the impact of public pressure on individuals in the public eye.

The pageant remains a significant cultural and entertainment event, capturing the attention and interest of audiences both nationally and internationally. The recent broadcast’s increased viewership signifies the pageant’s enduring appeal and relevance, with the platform it provides for celebrating diversity, empowerment, and beauty in all its forms.
