International Scholars Program at University of British Columbia 2024-2025
The University of British Columbia (UBC) offers the International Scholars Program, which includes four prestigious need-and-merit-based awards for international students:
- Karen McKellin International Leader of Tomorrow Award: This award recognizes exceptional prospective international undergraduate students who demonstrate outstanding academic performance and exemplary leadership abilities, fostering collaboration, empathy, and active listening.
- Donald A. Wehrung International Student Award: This award is aimed at outstanding international undergraduate students from impoverished or war-torn regions who have achieved academic success despite difficult circumstances and require significant financial support to attend university.
- International Impact Award: This award honors exceptional students who have shown leadership and commitment to addressing sustainability, climate change, natural resource management, social justice, equity, inclusion, or societal health. Priority is given to first-generation learners and those from diverse backgrounds.
- Vantage One Excellence Award: Offered by UBC Vantage College, this award targets academically outstanding international students who do not yet meet the English Language Admission Standard for direct entry to UBC.

Scholarship Value/Inclusions/Duration:
The scholarship value is based on financial need, calculated by assessing tuition, fees, and living costs against the financial contributions from the student and their family. Awards can be renewed for up to three additional years, contingent on satisfactory academic performance, continued financial need, and maintenance of a Canadian study permit.
Eligibility Requirements:
- Must be an international student studying in Canada on a study permit.
- Must be entering UBC from a recognized secondary school or transferring from a post-secondary institution.
- Must have graduated from high school no earlier than June two years prior to the academic year of application.
- Must be applying for a first undergraduate degree.
- Must demonstrate superior academic achievement (e.g., all As or equivalent).
- Must show significant financial need preventing enrollment at UBC.
- Must meet UBC’s admission criteria, including specific requirements and English language standards.
For the Vantage One Excellence Award:
All eligibility criteria apply, except applicants must not yet meet UBC’s English language admission requirements and must be coming directly from high school into the UBC Vantage One Program.
Application Instructions:
To apply, you must be nominated by your school or a non-profit organization and provide a reference from an academic referee. Confirm that your nominator can submit your application. You will be automatically considered for all eligible awards when you apply. The application deadline is November 15, and the UBC admissions application is due by December 1.
