Mbare Musika Fire: President Mnangagwa to The Rescue

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has declared a state of disaster following a devastating fire at Mbare Traders Market in Harare on October 8, 2024. The inferno, which broke out on a Tuesday night, resulted in significant destruction at one of the country’s largest informal trade hubs, affecting over 4,000 traders.
Local Government and Public Works Minister Daniel Garwe confirmed the declaration under the Civil Protection Act, stating,
“The unfortunate inferno razed down the whole retail section and parts of the wholesale market, negatively impacting many livelihoods.”

He emphasized that this declaration would help mobilize resources, both financial and material, to support the rebuilding of the market and assist affected entrepreneurs in reviving their businesses.
The fire destroyed numerous market stalls and valuable merchandise, leaving many vendors struggling for income. While the exact cause is still under investigation, eyewitnesses have suggested it may have originated from cigarette smokers in the area.
The City of Harare’s fire department, supported by local emergency teams, worked diligently to contain the blaze, with the Zimbabwe Republic Police also involved in managing crowds and preventing looting.
The government, alongside the private sector and other stakeholders, is committed to rebuilding the market and supporting those impacted by this tragedy.
