Tragic Betrayal: Lover Slain in Cold Blood Over Lobola Dispute

A Fatal Mistake: Man's Greed Leads to Murder Over Lobola

THE High Court of South Africa, Gauteng Division has sentenced Louis Serenetra Moyo (49) to life in jail on Tuesday, 5 November.

He was sentenced for the murder of his lover, Thobile Grace Khoza (41). Moyo also received an additional six months for unlawfully being in the country.

He pleaded guilty to both charges, acknowledging the severity of his actions.

The tragic incident occurred on 12 March 2024, during a domestic dispute that escalated into violence.

According to Phindi Mjonondwane, the Gauteng NPA regional spokeswoman, investigations were led by Sergeant Mkhize of the Protea South cop shop.

“The couple had been cohabiting since 2020. The argument reportedly revolved around R15 000 in Khoza’s bank account, which Moyo intended to use for paying lobola. During the confrontation, Moyo brutally assaulted Khoza using various objects, ultimately stabbing her, and leaving her to bleed to death. After the attack, he locked the room and fled the scene. Three days later, on 15 March 2024, the landlord discovered Khoza’s decomposed body after being alerted by an unusual odour and the presence of flies,” she said.

Mjonondwane said the police arrested Moyo shortly thereafter, finding him in possession of the victim’s bank card, identity document, and cellphone.

“In his plea, Moyo admitted to having committed the heinous act during a fit of rage and acknowledged that his actions were premeditated. During closing arguments, the state prosecutor emphasised the senselessness of the violence inflicted upon an innocent woman who had every right to feel safe in her home, yet tragically fell victim to betrayal,” she said.

When delivering the sentence, Judge Dosio condemned Moyo’s actions, highlighting a blatant disregard for the laws of South Africa and the severe nature of gender-based violence, which has become a significant issue in the country.

The judge reinforced the necessity of imposing harsher penalties on perpetrators of such crimes, stating that the judicial system must act decisively to prevent violence against women.

“The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) remains resolute in its commitment to combatting gender-based violence and ensuring justice for victims. This case serves as a reminder of the urgent need for support services and early intervention to prevent further tragedies stemming from intimate partner violence,” Mjonondwane said.
