Namibia braces for Sam Nujoma’s hero’s Funeral
Late 'founding father' to be buried March 1, 2025
Namibian President, Nangolo Mbumba has announced that revered late statesman and founding president, Sam Nujoma has been accorded a hero’s funeral.
According to reports from the southern African nation, the celebrated former president will be buried on 1 March 2025 at the National Heroes’ Acre.
Namibians, who started observing days of national mourning since February 9, will continue doing so until March 1.
And, in honor of Nujoma’s memory, President Mbumba has declared 1 March, 2025, as a public holiday.
Nujoma, who died last week in the capital Windhoek at the age of 95, is celebrated as the first president of independent Namibia.
He led the long fight for independence from South Africa in 1990 after helping found Namibia’s liberation movement known as the South West Africa People’s Organisation (Swapo) in the 1960s.
Namibia’s founding leader then led the country after the attainment of independence in 1990, and ruled the southern African nation for fifteen years.
Prior to his demise, Nujoma had been in hospital for the past three weeks with an illness from which he ‘could not recover’, said the Presidency in a statement.
