Toyota Quantum Caught Smuggling BronCleer and Benylin Across Border Under Fake Funeral Cover
A Toyota Quantum minibus, traveling from South Africa to Zimbabwe, was intercepted at the Beitbridge border post, raising eyebrows after authorities discovered a shocking cargo hidden behind a false pretense.
The vehicle, branded with “Claremont Funeral Policy” decals, claimed to be transporting a deceased body for burial in Zimbabwe. The driver presented paperwork stating they were on an official funeral trip, a common practice for cross-border burials. However, when border authorities requested to inspect the “coffin,” the truth unraveled.

Instead of a body, the officers uncovered large quantities of BronCleer cough syrup (popularly known as Bronco) and Benylin with codeine — both of which are often abused as recreational drugs. The stash was cleverly hidden beneath funeral wreaths and blankets, with the hope that the somber nature of their cover story would deter any suspicion.
According to one official, “They tried to use the emotional weight of a funeral to avoid inspection, but the authorities noticed inconsistencies in their paperwork and behavior.”
The driver and two passengers were immediately detained for further questioning. Investigations are underway to determine the source of the drugs and whether a larger syndicate is involved in using funeral vehicles as a smuggling front.
Locals at the border were stunned by the audacity of the operation. “People respect funeral processions, so using that as a cover is just wrong,” said one witness.
The incident has sparked concerns about the growing trend of drug smuggling between South Africa and Zimbabwe, with calls for tighter security measures at border crossings.
