Zanu PF Demands Insiza North Primary Election Re-Run Following Voting Irregularities

Contested Results Spark Political Turmoil
The initial May 3 primary, intended to select a candidate for the upcoming by-election following the death of MP Farai Taruvinga, saw Moses Langa declared winner. However, opponents Delani Moyo and Qhubani Moyo immediately challenged the outcome, citing numerous irregularities including delayed delivery of voting materials and suspected ballot manipulation.

Last-Minute Decision Shakes Up Race

After extensive deliberations during Sunday night’s high-level party meeting, Zanu PF leadership overturned political commissar Munyaradzi Machacha’s recommendation to uphold Langa’s victory. Party insiders revealed the presidency prioritized constituency unity over logistical convenience in making their determination.
“The leadership concluded that ignoring these irregularities would damage party cohesion in Insiza North,” disclosed a source familiar with the closed-door discussions. The re-run has been scheduled for May 13, creating an unprecedented time crunch for candidates.
By-Election Landscape Takes Shape
In the annulled primary, Langa—son of former sports minister Andrew Langa—secured 2,478 votes against miner Delani Moyo’s 1,564 votes and ex-ZEC commissioner Qhubani Moyo’s 983 votes. The eventual winner will contest the June 24 by-election alongside Gutu East’s candidate, where another vacancy emerged after Zanu PF expelled sitting MP Benjamin Ganyiwa.

Political analysts predict Zanu PF will likely retain both constituencies, citing the opposition’s current fragmentation. The compressed timeline for the Insiza North re-run presents significant organisational challenges for all involved parties as Zimbabwe’s political season intensifies.
