ZIMSEC Forced to Reschedule Exams After Calendar Changes

The Zimbabwe Schools Examination Council (ZIMSEC) faces a logistical challenge as it attempts to notify thousands of examination candidates about urgent exams  date changes for two major papers.

Education authorities recently identified an oversight in the mid-year Ordinary Level examination timetable where English and Combined Science papers were incorrectly scheduled for Monday, May 26. This date becomes a public holiday in 2025 as Africa Day (May 25) falls on a Sunday, triggering the holiday’s observance on the following Monday under Zimbabwean law.

Zimsec Exams Date Changes Rectified

ZIMSEC spokesperson Nicky Dlamimi confirmed the adjustment, stating:

“We’ve rectified the timetable by moving all May 26 examinations to Friday, May 23. Notifications have been distributed to all registered examination centers.”

Communication Challenges Emerge

The last-minute changes raise concerns about whether all candidates – particularly private students not attached to schools – will receive timely updates. Dlamimi emphasized that examination centers bear primary responsibility for informing their registered candidates about schedule modifications.

“We’ve issued comprehensive circulars to schools alongside entry statements,” Dlamimi explained. “While centers must contact their candidates directly, ZIMSEC is also utilizing multiple communication platforms to disseminate this critical information.”

Candidate Numbers Remain Unclear

When pressed for specific enrollment figures, ZIMSEC officials couldn’t immediately provide a breakdown between school-based and private candidates affected by the rescheduling. This lack of detailed data complicates efforts to ensure all examinees receive proper notification about the revised examination dates.
