Glenview South MP Happymore Chidziva Acquitted Of Rape Charges

Harare magistrate Letwin Rwodzi cleared Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) representative Happymore Chidziva of all sexual assault allegations involving a minor family member.
Case Background and Judicial Findings
The controversial case stemmed from September 2024 allegations that the Glen View South parliamentarian had engaged in non-consensual relations with his wife’s 16-year-old niece on multiple occasions. After months of legal proceedings, the court determined prosecutors failed to establish guilt beyond reasonable doubt.
Magistrate Rwodzi’s ruling highlighted critical evidentiary gaps, particularly regarding the accuser’s claim about employment assistance from the legislator. The judgment noted inconsistencies in the timeline of events and lack of corroborating proof for the serious allegations.

Happymore Chidziva Acquitted Of Rape Allegations
The prosecution had alleged three separate incidents between April and August 2024. The first reportedly occurred at the Jameson Hotel after the MP allegedly lured the teenager under false pretences. Subsequent encounters were said to have occurred at Waterfalls guesthouse and Cresta Lodge in Masasa.
Key prosecution claims included:
- Alleged monetary compensation following encounters
- Text messages regarding emergency contraception
- Promises of foreign employment opportunities
The defence successfully challenged these assertions, arguing the interactions were consensual and that the timeline didn’t support the accusations. Legal representatives emphasised the absence of physical evidence and questioned the complainant’s delayed reporting.

Community Reaction and Aftermath
The verdict has sparked mixed reactions across Zimbabwe’s political landscape. While supporters celebrate the acquittal, women’s rights organisations have expressed concern about potential chilling effects on assault reporting.
Political analysts suggest that despite the legal vindication, the case may have lasting implications for Chidziva’s career. The MP has not yet made a public statement following the court’s decision.
This high-profile case highlights ongoing challenges in Zimbabwe’s judicial handling of sexual violence cases, particularly those involving public figures and minor accusers.
