DJ Shugeta explains Koffi Olomide stage ‘insult’

Musician and radio host Shugeta has commented on an incident when Koffi Olomide of the Congo seems to have swatted him off the stage.

The weekend’s Africa Explosion festival in Kadoma featured a performance by the Congolese maestro. The South African pair Mafikizolo and regional performers like Tamy Moyo, Sulumani Chimbetu, and Jah Prayzah were all part of the impressive programme.

The show was going very smoothly until Koffi arrived. As Shugeta, the MC, energised the audience, the Congolese legend entered the stage.

Shugeta turned after being tapped on the back by Koffi, who then gave him a quick smack on the cheek to persuade him to leave the stage.

Shugeta then graciously turned aside and left the stage to make room for the Congolese hitmaker to electrify the Kadoma crowd.

Zimbabweans took exception at the occurrence and believed Koffi Olomide overstepped his bounds in a nation that was not his own. The event has prompted a discussion on social media about how foreign celebrities treat local artists.

After the incident, Shugeta appeared and left a lengthy comment on one Facebook page, outlining what happened and dispelling rumours that Koffi Olomide had disrespectfully slapped him and chased him off stage.

He clarified:

“So ndirikuona a lot of comments here about me. Anyway, ndangoti ndingojekesawo something. I was emceeing at the event and ndaishanda closely ne these big artists ese aivepo vachindiudza zvavaida pakupinda pa stage, during the performance and even mabudiro.

“And Koffi akandiudza backstage achisvika kuti kana ndaakuuya ndikuzoda hype then kana ndasvika I will give you a signal. So paakauya ndichipa hype to me that was the signal.

“Left the stage to the King man sezvatanga tawirirana. Remember I was working that’s how I put food on my table so ndaizopikisa ndakamira papi?”
