{Watch} Kenyan High School Closes After Nearly 100 Girls Hit With Mysterious Illness Causing Leg Paralysis

Kenya’s St. Theresa’s Eregi Girls High School has temporarily closed its doors due to a mysterious illness that has gripped over 95 students, causing paralysis in their legs.

The Africa News reported the exact cause of this ailment remains unknown and the Kenyan government is probing the matter.

Blood samples from the affected students have been sent to the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) for analysis to shed light on the nature and origin of the illness, the report said.

“The education department, county government, and public health department are committed to ensuring the children receive appropriate treatment,” Jared Obiero, the regional director of education, was quoted as saying by Africa News.

Some media reports said the situation reached a critical point when students, grappling with the condition, demanded to go home. Initially, the school administration reported around 80 students hospitalised, but that number has now reached 95.

Local reports said some of the affected students have been admitted to various hospitals, with 30 at Kakamega Level Five Hospitals, 20 at Shibwe Level Four Hospital, and 12 at Iguhu Level Four Hospital. Initial laboratory tests have indicated elevated electrolyte levels, suggesting fluid loss.

While the cause of this mysterious illness remains undetermined, some reports have attributed the incident to “mass hysteria.” Kenyan health officials are actively working to understand the ailment’s origin and develop appropriate treatment protocols for the affected students.
